Land vs Region: Understanding the Difference

Parcel Management (About Land)
  • Controls individual parcels
  • Media streams, access lists
  • Parcel-specific settings
  • See our Land Management Guide
Region Management (This Guide)
  • Controls entire 256x256m region
  • Terrain, restarts, environment
  • Region-wide settings
  • Requires estate/region permissions

Accessing Region/Estate Tools

Your command center for region-wide administration

Method 1: Main Menu

  1. Click World in the top menu bar
  2. Select Region Details or Region/Estate
  3. The Region/Estate window opens with multiple tabs

Permission Required

You must be the region owner or have estate manager permissions to access these tools. Contact the region owner if you can't open this window.

Check your permissions: If you own the region, these tools are automatically available.

Region/Estate Tool Tabs

Master each tab for complete region control

Region Tab

Basic region information and critical management functions.

Region Information
  • Region Name: Your sim's name
  • Location: Grid coordinates
  • Version: Server software version
  • Owner: Region owner's name
Restart Region

The most important button! Restarts your region to apply changes or fix issues.

Warning: All avatars will be logged out. Announce before restarting!
Region Settings

Block Terraform:
Prevent terrain editing

Block Fly:
Disable flying region-wide

Allow Damage:
Enable combat damage

When to Restart:
  • After changing region settings
  • When scripts aren't working properly
  • If physics seems broken
  • As regular maintenance (weekly recommended)

Debug Tab

Performance monitoring and troubleshooting tools.

Performance Stats
  • Time Dilation: 1.0 = perfect, lower = lag
  • FPS: Region frames per second
  • Physics FPS: Physics simulation rate
  • Script Time: CPU usage by scripts
Console & Logs

View region console messages and error logs. Useful for diagnosing script issues or server problems.

Tip: Screenshot error messages when asking for support!

Ground Textures Tab

Customize the four terrain textures that paint your land.

Four Terrain Layers
Southwest (Low)

Lowest elevations

Northwest

Medium-low

Southeast

Medium-high

Northeast (High)

Highest elevations

How it works: The sim automatically blends these four textures based on your terrain's height. Upload your own textures for custom looks!

Elevation Ranges

Adjust the height ranges where each texture appears. This controls the blending between textures.

Texture Requirements
  • 512x512 or 1024x1024 pixels
  • JPG or TGA format
  • Seamlessly tileable
  • Under 1MB file size

Terrain Tab

Advanced terrain manipulation tools for creating landscapes.

Upload RAW Terrain

Import heightmap files created in external tools like World Machine, L3DT, or Terragen.

Format: RAW file, 256x256 pixels
Tip: Use grayscale where white = high, black = low
Download RAW Terrain

Export your current terrain as a RAW file for backup or editing in external programs.

Use case: Backup before major changes or share terrain designs
Terrain Tools

Raise/Lower:
Create hills and valleys

Smooth:
Blend rough terrain

Flatten:
Create level areas

Warning: Major terrain changes can cause objects to fall or float. Backup first!
Pro Workflow:
  1. Design terrain in external tool (World Machine, etc.)
  2. Export as 256x256 RAW file
  3. Upload to region via Terrain tab
  4. Fine-tune with in-world terrain tools
  5. Apply custom ground textures

Estate Tab

Manage estate-wide access and permissions across multiple regions.

Estate Managers

Add trusted users as estate managers. They can restart regions, manage terrain, and control estate settings (but not transfer ownership).

Allowed Residents

Create an estate-wide allow list. These residents can access all regions in your estate.

Banned Residents

Estate-wide ban list. Banned residents cannot enter any region in your estate.

Allowed Groups

Grant access to entire groups across all estate regions.

Important: Estate bans override parcel-level permissions. Someone banned from the estate cannot enter even if they're on a parcel's allow list.

Environment Tab (EEP)

Enhanced Environment (EEP) settings for sky, water, and lighting.

What is EEP?

Enhanced Environment Project (EEP) gives you complete control over your region's visual atmosphere:

Sky Settings

Sun position, clouds, colors

Water Settings

Wave height, color, clarity

Day Cycles

Automated day/night transitions

Setting Environment
  1. Create/edit settings in World → Environment
  2. Save your environment preset
  3. Apply to region in this tab
  4. Can override with parcel-level environments
Environment Presets

Popular choices:

  • Default: Standard day/night cycle
  • Sunset: Permanent golden hour
  • Night: Starry night scene
  • Custom: Design your own!
Creative Use:
  • Fantasy worlds: Purple skies, multiple moons
  • Underwater: Green tint, low visibility
  • Space stations: Black sky, no atmosphere
  • Romantic venues: Permanent sunset
