1. Course Overview

Welcome to Your Grand Adventure!

Welcome, future explorer! My name is Cartier Granger, and I'll be your guide on this exciting journey. The Alife Virtual world is a vast and ever-changing universe, filled with incredible places to see, exciting events to attend, and wonderful people to meet. But like any great explorer, you need a map and a compass. This course is designed to be exactly that.

In "Exploring Your World," we will demystify the tools you need to navigate our metaverse with confidence. We'll transform you from a newcomer who might feel a little lost into a seasoned traveler who can teleport across the grid, discover hidden gems, and manage your favorite locations with ease. Think of this as your personal GPS and travel diary for the virtual world.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Confidently use the World Map and Mini-Map to understand your surroundings.
  • Utilize the powerful Search function to find people, places, events, and groups.
  • Create, manage, and organize Landmarks for your favorite locations.
  • Understand the different methods of teleportation, including direct teleports, landmark teleports, and using coordinates.

You'll be able to plan trips, meet friends at specific locations, find events that match your interests, and build your own personal collection of must-visit spots.

Prerequisites

  • A registered Alife Virtual account.
  • The Firestorm Viewer installed and configured.
  • A curious and adventurous spirit!

2. Lesson 1: Mastering the World Map & Mini-Map

Your Compass in the Metaverse

The most fundamental tool for any explorer is the map. In Alife Virtual, you have two: the comprehensive World Map and the convenient heads-up display (HUD) element, the Mini-Map. Understanding these tools is the first step to true freedom of movement.

Theory: Reading the Grid

The Alife Virtual world is a grid of interconnected squares called Regions (or sometimes "sims"). Each region is a 256x256 meter square of virtual land. The World Map shows you this grid. When you are "in-world," you are always located on a specific region at a specific coordinate point.

The map uses colors to give you instant information:

  • Blue: Water
  • Green: Land with public access.
  • Yellow/Beige: Land that is for sale.
  • Magenta/Purple: Land that is part of an auction.
  • Red: Land you own.

You'll also see icons. A yellow arrow or dot shows your current position. A house icon shows your designated "Home" location. Flag icons represent your saved Landmarks.

Step-by-Step Guide: Using the World Map

  1. Opening the World Map: Press the key combination Ctrl + M on your keyboard, or go to the top menu and select World > World Map. A new window will open displaying the grid.
  2. Finding Yourself: You should see a bright yellow arrow indicating your avatar's current position and orientation. If you don't see it, click the "Find Me" button on the map window.
  3. Panning and Zooming: Use your mouse's scroll wheel to zoom in and out of the map. To pan (move the map around), simply click and drag with your left mouse button.
  4. Getting Information: Hover your mouse over any region on the map. A tooltip will appear showing the region's name and its maturity rating (e.g., PG, Mature). Click on a region to select it and see more details in the information pane.
  5. Basic Teleportation: Find a green (publicly accessible) area on the map. Double-click on that spot. A confirmation might appear. Click "Teleport," and you will be instantly transported to that location! Congratulations, you've just teleported using the map!

Step-by-Step Guide: Using the Mini-Map

  1. Activating the Mini-Map: The Mini-Map should be visible by default in the top right corner of your screen. If not, press Ctrl + Shift + M to toggle it.
  2. Understanding the Display: The Mini-Map is a top-down, real-time view of your immediate surroundings. You are the white dot in the center. Other avatars appear as green dots.
  3. Interacting with the Mini-Map: You can click the small icons on the Mini-Map to zoom in or out. You can also right-click on it to access more options, like rotating the map or stopping its rotation. It's a fantastic tool for seeing if anyone is nearby without having to turn your camera.

Key Concepts

Region: A 256x256 meter server instance that forms the basic building block of the world.
Parcel: A subdivided piece of land within a region, which can have its own owner and rules.
Coordinates (X, Y, Z): Your precise location in the world. X and Y represent your position on the region map, and Z represents your altitude.
Teleport (TP): The act of instantly traveling from one point to another.

3. Lesson 2: The Power of Search & Landmarks

Finding People, Places, and Events

Now that you can read a map, how do you find specific destinations? The world is too big to explore randomly. This is where the Search tool becomes your best friend. And once you find a place you love, you'll want to save it for later using a Landmark.

Theory: The Universal Finder

The Search function (often called "Find") is a powerful database that catalogs almost everything in Alife Virtual. It's divided into tabs to help you narrow down what you're looking for. Knowing which tab to use is the key to efficient searching.

Step-by-Step Guide: Using the Search Tool

  1. Opening Search: Press Ctrl + F or click the "Search" button on the bottom toolbar of your viewer. The Search window will appear.
  2. Using the 'Places' Tab: This is for finding locations. Click the "Places" tab. In the search bar, type "Alife Virtual School" and press Enter. You'll see our school in the results. Click on it, and you'll see options on the right like "Teleport," "Show on Map," and "Create Landmark."
  3. Using the 'Events' Tab: Looking for something to do? Click the "Events" tab. You can filter events by category (like Live Music, Education, Shopping) and maturity rating. This is the best way to find out what's happening *right now* or later today.
  4. Using the 'People' Tab: Want to find a friend? Click the "People" tab and type their resident name. You can then view their profile, send them an IM, or offer to teleport to them (if their privacy settings allow).
  5. Using the 'Groups' Tab: Communities are the heart of Alife Virtual. Use this tab to find groups dedicated to your hobbies, whether it's building, scripting, roleplaying, or art.

Step-by-Step Guide: Creating and Managing Landmarks

A Landmark is a personal bookmark for a specific location. It's the single most important tool for building your personal travel guide.

  1. Creating a Landmark: Travel to a location you want to save. Go to the top menu and select World > Create Landmark Here. A new item will appear in your inventory's "Landmarks" folder. That's it!
  2. Accessing Your Landmarks: Open your inventory (Ctrl + I). Find the system folder named "Landmarks." All your saved landmarks will be in here.
  3. Using a Landmark: Find the landmark in your inventory and double-click it. A map window will pop up showing the location. Click the "Teleport" button to travel there.
  4. Organizing Your Landmarks: As you collect more landmarks, your folder can get messy. You can create sub-folders inside your main Landmarks folder! Right-click on the "Landmarks" folder and select New Folder. You can create folders like "Shopping," "Friends' Homes," "Cool Nature Spots," etc. Then, just drag and drop your landmarks into the appropriate folders to keep them organized.

4. Lesson 3: Advanced Navigation & Regional Awareness

Exploring Like a Pro

With map reading and landmarks under your belt, it's time to learn the techniques that seasoned residents use. This lesson covers direct coordinate travel, understanding parcel details, and using external location links.

Advanced Applications: SLurls and Coordinates

A SLurl (Second Life URL) is a web link that points to a specific in-world location. Despite the name, they work perfectly in Alife Virtual and other OpenSim worlds. You'll often see them on websites, forums, or in chat. When you click one, your viewer will offer to teleport you to that spot.

Example of a SLurl format: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/RegionName/128/128/25

You can also teleport directly using coordinates. On the World Map (Ctrl+M), you'll see input boxes for Location, usually formatted as RegionName/X/Y/Z. If someone gives you coordinates like "Alife Virtual School/128/150/22", you can type that directly into the map's location bar and hit Enter to teleport.

Real-World Scenario: Parcel Investigation

Imagine you've found a beautiful, quiet spot and are thinking of buying land there. Before you do, you need to be a detective. You need to understand the rules of the land.

  1. Stand on the parcel of land you're interested in.
  2. Look at the very top of your viewer window. You will see the parcel's name and some icons (e.g., a camera icon if photos are restricted, a prim icon if building is not allowed).
  3. For more detail, right-click the ground and select About Land. This opens a crucial window with multiple tabs:
    • General: Shows the owner's name, land type (Mainland, Estate), and any sale information.
    • Covenant: This is the rulebook for the Region. It might contain rules about building styles, commercial activity, or behavior. ALWAYS read this.
    • Objects: Shows who owns the objects on the parcel and the total prim count.
    • Access: This tab shows who is allowed to enter the parcel. It might be public, restricted to a group, or have a specific ban list.

Understanding this information is a critical skill, not just for buying land, but for being a respectful visitor. It tells you if you're allowed to build, rezz objects, or even be there at all.

Best Practices for Navigators

  • Name Landmarks Clearly: Don't leave your landmarks named "Landmark (12)". Rename them immediately to something descriptive like "Alife School - Main Classroom" or "Bob's Awesome Beach House". Right-click the landmark in your inventory and choose "Rename".
  • Use Teleport History: Accidentally teleported away? Use the "Back" arrow at the top left of your viewer to go back to your previous location. It's a lifesaver!
  • Check Maturity Ratings: Before teleporting to a new region from the map or search, check its rating (PG, Mature, Adult). Make sure you're comfortable with the content you might find there.
  • Share Landmarks with Friends: You can give landmarks to other people! Just drag the landmark from your inventory onto their avatar or into an IM window. It's the easiest way to invite someone to a location.

5. Hands-On Exercises

Time to put your new skills to the test! Complete these exercises in-world to solidify your knowledge.

Instructions: Use the World Map (Ctrl+M) to find and visit three different types of regions.
  1. Find a region that is mostly blue (water) and teleport to the middle of it.
  2. Find a region that is mostly yellow (land for sale) and teleport there.
  3. Find a busy, green region (hint: look for regions with many green dots on the map, indicating other avatars).
Expected Outcome: You will be comfortable using the map's color codes to choose destinations and teleporting to them.

Instructions:
  1. Go to your Inventory and create a new folder inside your "Landmarks" folder called "AV-104 Course".
  2. Teleport to the "Alife Virtual School" region. Create a landmark and name it "AVS - Main Campus". Drag it into your new folder.
  3. Use the Search tool to find a "Sandbox" (a place where you can practice building). Teleport there, create a landmark, name it "Public Sandbox", and move it to your course folder.
  4. Find a third location you find interesting on your own. Create and save a landmark for it in the same folder.
Expected Outcome: You will have a new, organized folder in your inventory containing three distinct and properly named landmarks.

Instructions:
  1. Open the Search window (Ctrl+F) and go to the "Events" tab.
  2. Filter the events by a category that interests you, such as "Live Music" or "Games".
  3. Find an event that is currently happening or starting soon.
  4. Click the "Teleport" button from the search result to attend the event. Stay for a few minutes to observe.
Expected Outcome: You will successfully use the search tool to discover and attend a live event, demonstrating your ability to engage with the social aspects of the world.

Instructions:
  1. Open the World Map (Ctrl+M).
  2. In the location bar at the top of the map window, type the following exactly: Alife Virtual School/100/100/25
  3. Press Enter or click the "Teleport" button.
Expected Outcome: You will be teleported to a specific spot on the Alife Virtual School region, demonstrating your ability to navigate using precise coordinates.

6. Troubleshooting Guide

Common Roadblocks and How to Pass Them

Problem: "Teleport failed. Could not complete teleport."

This is a common issue with several possible causes:

  • The destination region might be offline or restarting. Try again in a few minutes.
  • The region might be full of avatars. Try again at a less busy time.
  • You may not have access. The parcel or region might be private or you might be banned. Check the Access tab in "About Land" if you can.
  • Your internet connection may have had a momentary blip. Simply trying again often works.
Problem: "My World Map is blank, grey, or just blue."

Your viewer is downloading the map images ("map tiles"). This can take time, especially on a slow connection. Be patient. If it persists, try clearing your viewer's cache. Go to Me > Preferences > Network & Files > Directories and click the "Clear Cache" button. You will need to restart the viewer afterwards.

Problem: "I can't find what I'm looking for in Search."

Double-check your spelling. Try using fewer, more general keywords. Make sure you are on the correct tab (e.g., searching for a location in the 'Places' tab, not the 'People' tab). Also, ensure the "Maturity" filters aren't hiding your result.

Problem: "I teleported into a cage or under the ground!"

This can happen occasionally. Don't panic! The easiest way out is to open your World Map (Ctrl+M) and teleport to a known safe location, like Alife Virtual School or your Home location. You can also use the World > Teleport Home menu option.

Tip: If you get truly stuck, use the universal "get unstuck" command: open chat and type /unstuck. This will attempt to move your avatar to a safe position on the current region.
